Latest Numbers on Health Savings Accounts Out

The latest numbers on HSA plan enrollment came out today from America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). The full report has lots of good trends and data. Here are the highlights:
  • The number of people covered by HSAs has grown to 4.5 million, up 43% from 2006's 3.2 million
  • 27% of new enrollees in the individual-market were previously-uninsured
  • 46% of new enrollees (including children) in the individual market were over age 40
  • One out of every four new individual-market health plans purchased are HSA-compatible plans
  • Most companies offering HSAs have plans that cover preventive care before the deductible
  • Most plan networks are PPOs
  • Most HSA enrollees had access to such vital tools as online account access, health education tools, hospital quality care information, some health cost information, and personal health records

There's also some good data out about the accounts themselves. Combining data from AHIP and the health research firm Atlantic Information Services:

  • There are now 1.65 million HSA accounts open, double the 2006 figure
  • Nearly $2 billion is held in HSAs, also double the 2006 figure
  • 31% of HSAs have a greater than $1000 balance in the account

What did a typical HSA plan look like in 2007? Across the spectrum of market sizes:

  • The average deductible ranged from about $1900-$2600 for singles, and $4000-$5200 for families
  • The average monthly premium in the small- and large-group markets was about $233 per month for singles, and $583 per month for families
  • The average monthly premium in the individual market (which varies by age), ranged from $116 to $291 for singles, and $266 to $542 for families
