The Honorable Kent Conrad
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Chairman Conrad:
I write today to strongly object to your holding taxpayers hostage to your appetite for more spending. President Bush has nominated Jim Nussle to be his Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and your obstructionist tactics are nothing more than a callous money-grab.
In today’s Washington Post, you write that Nussle’s nomination won’t even be considered until the Administration engages in a “serious discussion” with Congressional Democrats over spending levels.By that, you clearly mean that the President needs to ransom his choice for OMB Director from you and other big spenders in Congress.
This not only denies President Bush his choice for this important post, it fleeces taxpayers for more money. Jim Nussle served as Chairman of the House Budget Committee and was a defender of taxpayers’ dollars. You no doubt want to avoid his principled stance that Washington must hold the line on spending, since the first obligation of government is to taxpayers.
Taxpayers and their hard-earned dollars should not be leveraged in any high-stakes games of Senate Democrat obstructionism. In the interests of taxpayers, I call on you to give Jim Nussle an upor-down vote in your committee, and to report him to the Senate floor for full and fair consideration.
Sincerely,
Grover Norquist
