Hundreds of Marylanders gathered at the State Capitol on Monday to let Gov. O'Malley and the legislature know: We don't want our taxes raised.
And so the 2-week special session began, signaling the beginning of a battle between determined GOP legislators and a group of tax-and-spenders perched to raise taxes on just about everything imagineable (income, cigarettes, corporate income, gas).
At the foot of the capitol, rounds of lawmakers and activists spoke about the devastating effects tax increases would have on Maryland taxpayers. One sign read "Where did Marylanders go? To Delaware."
One of the hot topics of the day was O'Malley's aptitude for deceiving taxpayers. Despite taking over the governorship with a $1.4 billion budget surplus, O'Malley would have us all believe that he "inherited a deficit."
O'Malley, when you create the deficit by pushing legislation that increases state spending by nearly $2 billion, you cannot claim to have "inherited" the problem. As one rallier pointed out yesterday, O'Malley might mean that he inherited the spending bills from his big spending friends when they handed over passed bills for his signature.
ATR pointed out O'Malley's willingness to pull the wool over taxpayers eyes in the current debate. Don't let him get away with it in this hail mary special session!
One point that bears repeating over and over: Contact your legislator immediately. Tell them that you cannot and will not stand for higher taxes. They need to hear from you, Maryland taxpayers! Don't let Gov. O'Malley steamroll over taxpayers!
