For quite some time now, big government liberals have targeted the cigarette industry with tax increases to supposedly pay for healthcare programs and deter poor, helpless consumers from smoking.
Well cigarette tax increases are soo 1990’s. The new fad for statists and neo-new dealians is to tax snack foods and unhealthy foods such as soft drinks. KCBS 740 AM reports today on San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s plan to levy a tax on sugary drinks in order to combat childhood obesity.
It should not be the government’s business to determine or influence people's diets. Furthermore, it is no secret that sodas and high-calorie drinks are not exactly health foods. This proposal from the Mayor is intrusive and should insult the intelligence of San Franciscans.
