Peek-A-Boo: Utah to Join States in Push for Greater Transparency in Government Spending

They have been able to peek through rock formations in Arches National Park for a long time, but, if Sen. Wayne Niederhauser has his way, Utah taxpayers will soon be able to take a different kind of peek - in fact more than that - at government expenditures.

Sen. Niederhauser's legislation, SB 38, would:

provide access to public financial information such as monies, funds, accounts, bonds, loans, revenues and expenditures.

provide access to the actual expenditure document for expenditures made under a contract.

apply to all government branches of the state, including departments, colleges and universities as well as counties, cities and school districts with budgets of $1 million or more.

The bill furthermore provides for the creation of a Utah Transparency Advisory board, which will be tasked with making sure that private records stay private.

Hopefully, his fellow lawmakers and the governor will embrace Sen. Niederhauser's bill, so that Utahns can soon log onto a website like Oklahoma's (which went live on December 28) and track how their tax dollars are being spent.
