Norquist to Bloggers Lunch, “Homeschoolers want to be Left Alone”

Today, in the infamous Wednesday meeting room at Americans for Tax Reform, president and recent author of “Leave Us Alone: Getting the Government’s Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives”, Grover Norquist gave a powerful speech and entertained a few questions from the 20 or so bloggers over lunch.

Norquist laid out the “Leave Us Alone” coalition in a humorous and passionate speech. This coalition consists of gun and business owners, homeschoolers, property rights activists, pro-growthers, 401k owners, the religious sector, and of course, the anti-taxers.

What makes this coalition unique (and possible and growing), is that everyone in the room, according to Norquist, “doesn’t have to agree on the same issue.” In doing so, Norquist says they are antithetical to their counterpart, the Takings Coalition (trial lawyers, pro-taxers, unions, etc).

Specifically speaking of the physical embodiment of the Leave Us Alone coalition that occurs once a week in Washington, D.C., Norquist highlights in perhaps one of my favorite passages of his new book:

“…if for one and a half hours each Wednesday the Christians can agree not to raise anyone’s taxes, and the property rights activists can agree not to steal anyone’s guns and the gun owners can refrain from throwing prophylactics [sic] at the Christians’ kids—that is, if everyone can agree to keep out of the faces and pockets of everyone else in the room—then we can go forth and annoy the left for the rest of week” (Norquist, 21).
