Volunteering for a Paycheck?

Congress has come up with another logic-defying idea to waste a few million tax dollars. The GIVE Act, H.R. 2857, would spend another $20 million each year to pay kids to volunteer.

This bill would create a stipend of up to $1000 for students in grades 6-12 who complete a 100 hour community service program. Not to downplay the role of community service, but aren’t volunteers supposed to work for free? This bill would effectively tell kids it is good to "volunteer" for a paycheck.

Luckily for taxpayers, Congressman Flake once again comes to the rescue with an amendment to eliminate this wasteful program and save taxpayers $20 million annually. With Flake’s amendment, volunteers will remain volunteers.
